The alloy is worth taking seriously on a socket, and this one is fine chrome vanadium. Chrome vanadium is not a marketing phrase; it is a specific and well-chosen family of tool steel. Chromium raises hardness and wear resistance, which is what keeps the internal hex sharp instead of gradually rounding out. Vanadium refines the grain structure of the steel and adds toughness, which is what stops a hard socket from being a brittle one that splits under load. Getting both at once is the trick, and it is why chrome vanadium became the standard for hand tools rather than plain carbon steel.

Drop forging then does the other half of the job. The steel is heated and driven into a die, which flows the internal grain around the hexagonal shape instead of cutting through it. Since all the stress in a socket concentrates at the six corners of the hex, keeping unbroken grain running through those corners is precisely what stops sockets splitting. A socket cut from bar stock has its grain severed exactly where it is needed most.

The matt chrome plating over the top resists the oil, water, brake fluid and salt a socket lives in, and rust matters here in a specific way — corrosion inside the hex rounds off its corners, and a rounded socket rounds fasteners.

Two things to observe. Seat the socket fully before applying force, since one engaged only at the tips of the hex is the usual reason a nut gets rounded. And never fit a chrome hand socket to an impact wrench: chrome-plated hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under impact hammering and can crack and throw fragments.
