What happens when you do not have the right size is worth spelling out. A 14mm will not go on. A 16mm will, loosely, and it will engage only at the extreme corners of the nut. Under load those corners are the first thing to yield, and a rounded fastener turns a straightforward job into a long one involving a stud extractor, a chisel or a grinder — and on a brake component, a job you cannot walk away from half done. The correct size costs very little and is the whole difference.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Chrome vanadium is the standard hand tool alloy: chromium raises hardness and wear resistance, vanadium refines the grain structure and adds toughness, and together they give a socket that resists both wearing round on the inside and cracking under load. It is the same family of steel used for good spanners and screwdriver blades, and it is what you should expect on any socket worth buying.

Drop forging matters as much as the alloy. The steel is heated and hammered into shape in a die, flowing its internal grain around the hexagonal form rather than cutting across it. All the stress in a socket concentrates at the six corners of the hex, and forging keeps unbroken grain running through exactly those points.

Two rules. Push the socket fully onto the fastener before applying any force — a partially seated socket bears only on the tips of the hex and is the commonest cause of rounding. And never use a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench, because plated hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under impact hammering and can crack and throw pieces at speed; impact guns need black chrome molybdenum impact sockets.
