Fourteen millimetres fits M10 fasteners in the pattern most Japanese manufacturers use, which makes it a size that comes up constantly on the vehicles that dominate Sri Lankan roads. Its most familiar job is probably the sump plug — a great many engines drain through a 14mm — and beyond that it covers suspension and steering fixings, engine and gearbox mountings, brake components, chassis fittings and general medium-duty assembly.
The sump plug is worth using as an example, because it illustrates something about this size range that people get wrong. A drain plug seals against a soft washer and threads into an aluminium sump. It needs to be tight enough to seal and no tighter. Over-tightened, the thread in the aluminium strips, and repairing a stripped sump thread is a far bigger job than the oil change was. At 14mm on a half-inch bar you have easily enough leverage to do that damage without noticing. This is the size at which knowing the torque figure — and using a torque wrench where one is specified — stops being fussiness and starts saving money.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Drop forging heats the steel and hammers it into a die, flowing the internal grain around the hexagonal shape rather than cutting through it. Since every socket concentrates its stress at the six corners of the hex, and a socket machined from bar has its grain severed exactly there, forging is the specification that decides whether a socket cracks under load.
Chrome vanadium gives the hardness, wear resistance and toughness a hand socket needs, and the chrome plating keeps it from corroding in the oil, water and salt it lives in.
The buyers are vehicle and motorcycle mechanics, three-wheeler and light commercial workshops, agricultural and machinery fitters, servicing and maintenance departments, and hardware dealers supplying garages.
Two habits worth keeping. Seat the socket completely on the fastener before applying force, because a socket engaged only on the tips of the hex is how nuts get rounded. And never fit a chrome hand socket to an impact wrench: plated, hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under hammering and can crack and throw fragments. Impact tools take black chrome molybdenum impact sockets. Ask on WhatsApp for a price, or for the sizes around it.
