Ten millimetres is the most used socket in the world and, by long tradition, the one that is never in the tray when you want it. Every mechanic has this joke because it is true: the 10mm gets used more than any other size, so it is the one that ends up in a pocket, on a wing, under a seat or in the bottom of the car.
The reason it gets used so much is M6. An M6 bolt takes a 10mm head, and M6 is the fastener size manufacturers reach for whenever something needs to be held on but does not need to be structural. That means covers, guards, shields, brackets, clips, trim, heat shields, sensor mounts, earth points, battery terminal clamps, air box fixings, plastic panels and a hundred other things on every vehicle and machine ever built. On a modern car, more fasteners are 10mm than any other size by a wide margin.
Because it is used constantly, it is also the size most worth buying a good one of — and most worth buying two of. A worn 10mm that has started rounding fasteners causes more lost time than any other tool in the box, because it is applied to so many of them.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging is what makes a small socket survive: the steel is hammered into shape in a die so its grain flows around the hex form instead of being cut through it, and the corners of a hex — where every bit of stress concentrates — are the exact place that matters. A cut-from-bar socket splits at those corners; a forged one is far less likely to.
The buyers are vehicle, motorcycle and three-wheeler mechanics, machinery and plant fitters, appliance and equipment technicians, maintenance staff, electricians, and hardware dealers, who sell more 10mm sockets than any other size.
Two practical points. Push the socket fully onto the fastener before applying force — a socket sitting half on engages only the tips of the hex and is the commonest cause of rounding. And never put a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench: the plating over hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under hammering and can crack apart at speed. Impact work needs black chrome molybdenum impact sockets. Message us on WhatsApp for a price, and buy two.
