At 8mm this is the small end, and the studs it deals with are the small ones — cover and shield fixings, exhaust manifold and heat shield studs on smaller engines, bracket and clamp studs, terminal posts, and the light assembly work found on appliances, motorcycles and small machinery. It also reaches down into recessed holes where a nut sits at the bottom of a counterbore and a standard socket cannot get to it.

There is a trade worth knowing about, because it explains why you want both types rather than only deep ones. A deep socket has a longer barrel, and a longer barrel twists slightly more under load than a short one. It also sits higher off the fastener, which means the ratchet is further from the work and any misalignment is magnified along that length. On a very tight or badly corroded fastener, a standard socket is stiffer, better aligned and less likely to let the nut round off. So the rule is simple: use a standard socket whenever it will reach, and a deep socket when it will not.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Chrome vanadium gives hardness and wear resistance from the chromium and toughness from the vanadium, and forging flows the steel's grain around the hexagonal form rather than cutting through it at the corners where the stress concentrates.

Two rules. Seat the socket fully before applying force, since a deep socket that is only part way on has even less engagement to work with than a standard one.
