Twenty-one millimetres deep is, above everything else, the wheel nut socket. Twenty-one is the most common wheel nut size in the world, and on a great many vehicles those nuts sit on studs long enough that a standard socket will not seat on the full height of the nut. This is the socket that does.
It is also the one most likely to be misused, so the warning goes first. This is a chrome-plated hand socket and it must never be put on an impact wrench. Wheel nuts are exactly the fasteners people attack with an impact gun using whatever socket is nearest, and chrome plating over hardened chrome vanadium is hard and comparatively brittle. The hammer blows inside an impact wrench crack it, and a long deep barrel flexes with every blow, which makes it more vulnerable than a short socket rather than less. When one lets go, the pieces leave at speed beside the operator's hands and face. Impact guns need black chrome molybdenum impact sockets — unplated, thicker walled, tougher alloy, designed for the duty — and there is a 10-piece 1/2" impact deep set in this range that includes 21mm.
The second thing worth saying about wheel nuts is torque, because both errors are dangerous. Under-tightened nuts work loose and a wheel comes off. Over-tightened nuts stretch the studs, and a stretched stud can snap later under load with the same result; over-tightening also warps brake discs, which is what makes a brake pedal pulse. Tighten by hand in a star pattern and finish with a torque wrench, which takes about a minute.
Beyond wheels, 21mm deep reaches M14 studs, hub and driveline fixings, and heavy machinery studs.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish, the forging flowing the grain of the steel around the hexagonal form rather than cutting through it at the six corners where the stress concentrates.
The buyers are tyre and wheel fitters, vehicle and commercial vehicle mechanics, roadside and breakdown services, fleet and bus workshops, and hardware dealers supplying the motor trade.
Seat it fully and square before pulling, and check the internal corners for wear from time to time — a worn socket on a wheel nut is a combination worth avoiding. Message us on WhatsApp for a price, or for the impact set and a torque wrench together.
