Nineteen millimetres deep reaches the M12 studs that hold a vehicle's structure together — suspension arms and links, engine and gearbox mounting studs, subframe fixings, propshaft and driveline flanges, and heavy machinery bracketry. On all of those the thread deliberately projects well past the nut, and a standard socket bottoms out on that projection long before its hex reaches the flats.

There is a second use for depth that has nothing to do with studs, and it is worth knowing because it catches people out. Sometimes the fastener is perfectly accessible but the space around it is not — the nut sits at the bottom of a channel in a subframe, or inside a chassis section, or down a hole in a bracket. A standard socket would fit the nut, but the socket plus the ratchet head together are too tall to enter the space. A deep socket puts the drive end up above the obstruction where the ratchet can reach it, which is often the only way in without dismantling something else first.

That points at a habit worth forming: think about the whole tool stack, not just the socket. Socket, extension and ratchet head all have to fit somewhere, and the answer to an awkward fastener is usually a different combination of those three rather than more force.

At this size the fasteners are structural and usually corroded, so they want penetrating oil and time rather than enthusiasm, and they want a torque wrench on reassembly. A suspension bolt that is loose works itself looser; one that has been over-tightened has been stretched and permanently weakened.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the steel's grain around the hexagonal form rather than cutting through it at the six corners, which matters most on a long, relatively thin-walled barrel like this.

Use a standard socket wherever it will reach, because a shorter barrel is stiffer and better aligned on a seized fastener. Seat it fully and square before pulling.
