A thirty-six inch pipe wrench is three feet of tool, and at that point the handle material stops being a footnote and becomes the reason you can trust it. The specification says ductile iron, and it is worth knowing what that means. Ordinary cast iron is strong under compression and brittle in bending — it will take an enormous squeeze and then crack without warning when you bend it. Ductile iron is cast iron whose graphite has been formed into spheres rather than flakes, and that change makes it behave far more like steel: it bends and stretches before it fails. On a handle this long, where a person's whole weight can end up at the far end, that is the difference between a tool that deforms and warns you and a tool that breaks while you are leaning on it.

The rest of the build follows the range: jaw teeth hardened by induction quenching so the biting edges resist rounding off while the jaw body stays tough, and a powder-coated finish that survives being left in the wet.

Work at this size is not domestic plumbing. It is main line and industrial pipework — large distribution and transmission pipe, borehole casing and pump columns, standpipes and hydrants, large valves, factory process pipework, and heavy galvanised or steel line. These are the joints that were made up years ago with a wrench this size and now need to come apart, usually after long enough that they have effectively become one piece of metal.

Two practical realities of a wrench this large. First, it is often a two-person tool, one on the handle and one holding the back-up wrench, and it should be treated as one rather than fought alone. Second, at this leverage the wrench is no longer the weakest thing in the chain. You can generate enough torque to twist the pipe itself, to crack a fitting, or to unwind a joint further along the line that you cannot see. Think about what will give way before you pull, and put a back-up wrench where you need the movement to stop.

The approach that works on seized large joints is patient rather than violent: penetrating oil left to soak, heat applied around the outside of the fitting so it expands away from the thread, a solid stance, and a steady pull rather than a jerk.
