Plastic pipe is not glued or threaded — it is welded. Socket fusion, which is what this machine does, heats the outside of the pipe end and the inside of the fitting at the same time on a pair of matched sockets, then the two are pushed together and the softened plastic fuses into one continuous piece as it cools. Done properly the joint is stronger than the pipe around it and there is no seal, gasket or adhesive in the system that can later fail. That is why PP-R plumbing has taken over hot and cold water installation.

This set is the 800W machine. It runs on ordinary 220 to 240V mains at 50Hz, carries heating sockets in six sizes — 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 63mm — and has a thermostat adjustable from 0 to 300°C, with PP-R work sitting up towards the top of that range. It handles PP-R, PB, PE and PE-RT, which between them cover essentially all of the plastic pressure pipe used in buildings here. The base is steel and the whole set comes in a steel box, with a CE-approved 1.8m plug and cable.

The 800W rating is the number that decides how the machine behaves in use, and it is worth being clear about. Wattage here is not power in the sense of a stronger weld — the weld temperature is set by the thermostat either way. What wattage buys is recovery: how fast the heating plate climbs back to temperature after a cold pipe and fitting have been pushed onto it and drawn heat out. On 20 and 25mm pipe, which is most domestic work, 800W recovers quickly enough that you will never notice. On a continuous run of 50 and 63mm joints it will need a moment between welds, and rushing that is how cold joints are made. If your work is mostly domestic and light commercial, 800W is well matched. If you are making large joints all day, the 2000W machine in this range recovers faster and comes with more in the box.

Getting good joints is a matter of discipline rather than skill. Let the machine reach temperature fully before the first weld, cut the pipe square, mark your insertion depth so the pipe does not go too far in and reduce the bore, and time both the heating and the holding — plastic welding is a timed process and guessing is what produces joints that look right and leak under pressure. Push straight in without twisting, then hold still until it has set. Keep the sockets clean of burnt plastic with a wooden scraper, never a blade, since the non-stick coating is what stops pipe sticking to the plate.
