A blocked sink does not usually need a plumber, a chemical, or anything taken apart — it needs something long, thin and flexible pushed down the pipe to break up whatever is sitting in it. That is exactly what this is: five metres of 9mm plated spring steel with a plastic handle on the end.
The five metre length defines what it is for. Five metres reaches the trap under a sink or basin, the bend behind it, and a good length of the branch pipe beyond — which is where the overwhelming majority of domestic blockages actually sit. Kitchen waste is grease and food that has cooled and stuck in the trap; bathroom waste is hair and soap. Both build up within the first couple of metres of the outlet, and both come away when something physically breaks them up and lets water start moving again. Anything further down the system is a different job and wants the ten metre version.
The construction is worth understanding because it explains how the tool works. It is a spring — a coil of steel wound so it can be fed round bends without kinking. That flexibility is the entire trick: a rigid rod stops dead at the first bend in a trap, while a spring follows the pipe, and the tighter the bend the more the spring matters. The plating on the steel keeps it from rusting, which is not a small thing for a tool that is repeatedly pushed into standing waste water and then put away in a bag.
Using it well is mostly about the twist. Feed the cable in until it meets the blockage, then turn the handle steadily while pushing gently. The rotation is what lets the end work its way into and through the obstruction and, on hair and fibrous blockages, wrap them up so they come out with the cable rather than being pushed further along. Straight shoving without turning usually just compacts the blockage into something worse.
The buyers are plumbers on domestic service calls, building and hotel maintenance staff, restaurant and kitchen operations who deal with grease traps regularly, landlords and property managers, and households. Hardware dealers sell this size as the everyday one.
Two practical notes. Run hot water through after clearing, because breaking a grease blockage up is only half the job — the rest of it needs flushing along before it settles again a metre further down. And wipe and dry the cable before it goes away; a plated cable left wet and coiled in a bag will still eventually corrode at the coils. If your problem is a floor drain, a toilet, or a run out to an inspection chamber, the ten metre cable is the one to buy instead. Message us on WhatsApp for a price on either length.
