The five metre length defines what it is for. Five metres reaches the trap under a sink or basin, the bend behind it, and a good length of the branch pipe beyond — which is where the overwhelming majority of domestic blockages actually sit. Kitchen waste is grease and food that has cooled and stuck in the trap; bathroom waste is hair and soap.
