Ten metres of cable buys you access to a completely different set of blockages from the short one, and the reason is simply geometry. Basin and sink blockages sit within a metre or two of the outlet. Floor drains, shower gullies, toilet outlets and the runs that carry waste out of a building to the first inspection chamber are much further along — often five, eight or nine metres — and a five metre cable will feed out its whole length and never touch the problem. This is the cable for the pipework between the fitting and the chamber.
It is 9mm plated spring steel with a plastic handle, the same construction as the shorter cable, and the design is what makes it work. Being a wound spring rather than a solid rod means it can follow the bends, junctions and gullies between here and the blockage instead of stopping at the first one. Over ten metres that matters a great deal, because a long run typically has several changes of direction and the cable has to negotiate every one of them while still transmitting a twist from your hand at the far end.
The technique is the same but takes more patience. Feed the cable in a metre or so at a time, turning the handle as you go rather than only when you meet resistance, because keeping it rotating helps it round bends instead of jamming at them. When you reach the blockage, keep turning under light pressure and let the end work through — the point is to break the obstruction up and give water somewhere to go, after which flow does most of the rest. Note the depth at which you meet resistance, since a blockage that recurs at the same distance every few months usually means a defect in the pipe at that point rather than bad luck, and that is worth digging up once instead of clearing four times.
The buyers are plumbers on drainage work, hotel, hospital and factory maintenance departments, restaurants and commercial kitchens with long grease-laden runs, property managers and landlords with multiple units, and drainage contractors as a first-response tool before bringing out machinery.
Handle it with some care. Ten metres of coiled spring steel has a mind of its own when released, so keep it under control while feeding and while retrieving. Wear gloves — the far end of this cable has been in places you would rather your hands were not, and drain water carries genuine infection risk. Clean the cable with disinfectant, dry it and coil it before it goes away, since plating will not save steel that is stored wet indefinitely. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price, or for both lengths together, which is what most working plumbers end up carrying.
