Twenty-four inches is a two-handed wrench, and it is generally bought as the second of a pair rather than as a first purchase. That is the single most useful thing to know about working at this size: on any threaded joint big enough to need a wrench this long, one wrench is not enough. You need a second one holding the fitting still while the first one turns, because otherwise all your effort simply unwinds the joint behind the one you are working on and you finish the day having moved the problem down the line.

That back-up wrench role is exactly what a twenty-four is good at. Its length gives it enough grip and enough resistance to hold a large fitting solidly while a shorter wrench does the turning, and when the joint itself is the stubborn one, it swaps round and becomes the turner.
