The fourteen-inch pipe wrench is the one that goes in the bag and comes out on nearly every call. It is short enough to swing in a cupboard under a sink or between two joists, light enough to carry all day with everything else, and long enough to shift the fittings that make up most domestic plumbing. If a plumber owns exactly one pipe wrench, it is generally this length.

It is worth being clear about what makes a pipe wrench different from an ordinary adjustable spanner, because people who have not used one often mistake it for a rough substitute. The upper jaw is deliberately not locked rigid. When you pull on the handle the jaw rocks slightly and the teeth dig further into the pipe, so the harder you pull the tighter the grip becomes. That is the entire principle. It means the wrench holds round pipe with no flats at all to grip, and it also means the tool is set roughly rather than precisely — you close it to about the right size and let the pull do the rest.
