Start with the blade, because 65Mn is a deliberate choice rather than a generic one. It is a high-carbon spring steel — carbon for hardness, manganese for hardenability and toughness — and it is the steel used where a cutting edge has to be hard but also has to survive being loaded sideways and shocked without chipping. On a cutting wheel that spends its life being pressed hard into copper and rolled around, that toughness is what stops the edge breaking out. Copper is not a difficult metal to cut but it is soft and sticky, and it will smear onto a wheel that is not properly hard, so the combination of a hard edge and a tough body is genuinely the right one for the job named on the spec.

Technique is simple and rewards patience. Set the wheel on the mark, tighten only until it bites, then take a full turn around the pipe before advancing the knob a fraction. If you are leaning on the knob you are doing it wrong — the tube goes oval, the rollers dig in, and the cut ends up out of round, which on a refrigeration flare is a leak waiting to happen. Ream the inner edge afterwards; the wheel always turns a lip inward and on small-bore copper that lip is a genuine restriction. Keep a spare wheel with the tool, since a blunt wheel is the whole difference between a clean cut and a fight.
