T40 appears on vehicle suspension, brake and driveline components, machinery and equipment mountings, structural fixings, and heavy appliance and plant assemblies. These are fasteners tightened to real torque figures, and the size of the blade and shaft reflects the force involved.

At this size the case for Torx over a cross-head is at its strongest. A Torx recess drives on faces almost perpendicular to the direction of turn, so it does not push the driver out however hard you turn. A Phillips recess is the opposite — designed to cam out at a set torque — and on a large, tight fixing that means constant fighting to stay engaged and a recess that rounds out if you lose. Manufacturers moved to Torx on high-torque fasteners for exactly this reason, and using the proper driver is what lets you apply the torque the joint actually needs.

Torx sizes are absolute. A T30 will spin in a T40 recess and round its points; a T45 will not enter. On large fixings the consequences of the wrong size are worse than on small ones, because the torque is higher and the damage happens faster.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for the hardness and wear resistance that preserves the six points under high torque, vanadium for the toughness that stops them chipping. The 8mm blade diameter is what carries that torque without twisting.

The handle is moulded TPR, and on a driver used at this force a grip that holds in an oily hand is a working requirement rather than a comfort.
