The length is what you are buying. A riveter works through a compound linkage, and handle length multiplies the force reaching the jaws. At 2.4 and 3.2mm rivets almost any riveter is comfortable; at 4.0 and especially 4.8mm a short tool becomes hard work, and hard work means a rivet set slowly and sometimes incompletely. The extra inch over a 9.5 inch tool makes the top of the range genuinely easy.

Steel rather than aluminium makes it heavier but tougher. A riveter that lives in a site bag, gets dropped off scaffolding and knocked about in a van will survive better in steel; the aluminium version is lighter for long overhead runs. Neither is simply better and the choice is about where the tool will live.

It takes 2.4, 3.2, 4.0 and 4.8mm rivets and is designed for single-handed operation, which is essential because the other hand is holding the work in alignment.

Blind rivets work by pulling a steel mandrel through a hollow body so the far end bulges against the blind side, then snapping the mandrel off — which is why they can join material you can only reach from one side, and why the joint is permanent.

Three habits. Match the rivet length to the total thickness of what you are joining — a rivet that is too short cannot form its bulge properly and a joint that looks finished will not hold. Drill the hole to the rivet's stated size, because an oversized hole gives the rivet nothing to grip. And keep the nosepieces with the tool: riveters come with interchangeable nose tips for each rivet size, and using the wrong one is the commonest reason a rivet sets badly.
