10.5" Pro Heavy Duty Hand Riveter

A riveter is held out at arm's length, often overhead, often for a long run of rivets, and squeezed hard each time. Weight matters more than people expect, and an aluminium body takes a noticeable amount off. On a ducting run, a cladding job or a signage frame with two hundred rivets in it, that is the difference between finishing comfortably and aching by lunchtime.

The trade is that aluminium is softer than steel, so the body is more easily damaged by being dropped or knocked about — which is why both versions exist and why the steel one suits a rougher environment.

At 10.5 inches this is the longer of the two hand riveters, and the extra length over a 9.5 inch tool gives more leverage, so larger rivets set with less effort. That matters at 4.8mm, which is where a small riveter starts to be hard work.

It handles 2.4, 3.2, 4.0 and 4.8mm rivets and is designed for single-handed use — necessary, since the other hand is holding the workpieces in line.

Blind rivets themselves are worth understanding: a hollow body with a steel mandrel through it, which the tool pulls to bulge the far end of the body against the blind side, then snaps off. The joint is permanent, and removing one means drilling its head away.

Three habits. Match rivet length to the combined material thickness — too short will not form the bulge properly, too long leaves the joint loose.
