The situation comes up constantly once you notice it: a screw in a corner, behind a pipe, inside a cabinet where the carcase is in the way, under a worktop, or on the far side of a component that cannot be moved. The screw is perfectly accessible to a bit — it is the drill body that cannot get into line with it. A universal joint puts a flexible coupling between the driver and the bit, so the driver can sit at an angle to the fastener.

The specification says it works at 25 degrees, and that figure is worth taking literally. Universal joints have a real angular limit, and pushing past it binds the joint, makes it snatch, and eventually breaks it. Twenty-five degrees is enough to clear most obstructions and it is not enough to drive round a corner — if you need more angle than that, the answer is a right-angle attachment rather than forcing this.

There is a technique to using one that makes the difference between working and not. Start the screw slowly and let the joint settle into its angle before applying torque, and support the bit end with your free hand for the first turns if you can. A universal joint under load at an angle wants to whip, and an unsupported one will walk the bit off the screw head.

At 1/4" x 90mm the extra length over a plain holder accommodates the joint itself.
