You will meet T30 on vehicle brake, suspension and body components, machinery and equipment mountings, larger appliance and cabinet fixings, and structural and decking screws. What those have in common is that they need to be tight, and that is exactly where the Torx form earns its keep.

The reason is geometry. A Torx recess is a six-pointed star whose driving faces are almost perpendicular to the direction of turn, so the tool is not pushed out of the screw as torque rises. A Phillips recess does the opposite by design — it cams out at a set torque, a 1930s feature for limiting over-tightening on production lines — which is why cross-head screws round out and why manufacturers moved to Torx for anything that has to be done up properly. On a large fixing that difference is decisive: with Torx you can apply the torque the joint needs and the driver simply stays engaged.

Torx sizes are absolute rather than approximate. A T27 will spin inside a T30 and round the points; a T40 will not enter. There is no near-enough, which makes a complete set genuinely necessary if you service modern equipment.

The blade is 6 x 100mm in Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, where chromium provides the hardness and wear resistance to hold the six points sharp under high torque and vanadium provides the toughness that stops them chipping.

The handle is moulded TPR, and grip matters when you are applying this much turning force.
