That is the practical case for owning the awkward Torx sizes. Because Torx sizes are absolute rather than approximate, there is no improvising: a T25 will spin inside a T27 recess and round its points, and a T30 simply will not enter. Unlike a slotted screw, where a slightly narrow blade will still turn it, a Torx screw either has the right driver or it does not — which is excellent for accuracy and unforgiving of an incomplete set.

T27 appears on vehicle body and interior fixings, brake and suspension components on some makes, machinery covers and panels, appliance assemblies, and construction and decking screws.

The advantage of the Torx form itself is worth restating because it is the reason it keeps spreading. Its six-pointed star has driving faces almost perpendicular to the direction of turn, so it does not try to eject the driver. A Phillips recess does exactly that by design, camming out at a set torque — which is why cross-heads round so easily and why anything that needs to be genuinely tight is increasingly made with Torx.

The blade is 5 x 100mm in Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium giving hardness and wear resistance to preserve the six points, vanadium giving the toughness that stops them chipping. Points are what a Torx tip lives on, and a rounded point slips where a sharp one grips.

The handle is moulded TPR.

Two points. Seat the tip fully before applying force, because a Torx tip only part way in bears on the point tips and will round out the recess — one of the few ways to damage a Torx screw.
