Torx Screwdriver with Soft Handle (T20 5x100)

A Torx recess is a six-pointed star, and its driving faces are almost perpendicular to the direction of turn. That geometry means it does not try to push the driver out of the screw. A Phillips recess does exactly that — it was designed to cam out at a set torque, which is why cross-heads round so readily — but Torx transfers torque without cam-out at all. The result is that far more turning force can be applied through a smaller head without damaging it, and the driver stays put rather than being pressed out.

That is why manufacturers adopted it. Modern vehicles, appliances, electronics, machinery and furniture use Torx extensively, particularly where a fixing has to be tight, small, or repeatedly removed. If you service any modern equipment, a set of Torx drivers stops being optional.

T20 is a small-to-middle size, common on appliance and equipment casings, electronics, small vehicle fixings, furniture fittings and machinery covers. Torx sizes are absolute — T20 is T20 regardless of manufacturer — which makes identification easier than with cross-heads, but it also means there is no near-enough: a T15 spins in a T20 recess and a T25 will not enter.

The blade is 5 x 100mm in Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance to hold the six fine points, vanadium for the toughness that stops those points chipping. Points are the vulnerable part of a Torx tip and hardness is what preserves them.

The handle is moulded TPR.

Two points. Seat the tip fully before applying force — a Torx tip only part way in bears on the tips of its points and will round the recess, which is one of the few ways to damage a Torx screw.
