The problem it solves is height above the screw. A normal screwdriver needs room for the blade plus the handle plus your hand, and there are plenty of situations that simply do not have it: a screw under a shelf, inside a cabinet with the top close above it, behind a panel with a beam across, inside an appliance or a vehicle dashboard, at the back of a machine with a casting overhead. In all of them the screw is accessible and the tool is not, and a stubby is the only thing that gets in.

The trade is leverage and comfort. A short handle held in the fingertips cannot be turned as hard as a full-size one gripped in the palm, so a stubby is not the tool for a seized screw — it is the tool for a reachable one. If a screw is tight and stubby access is all you have, break it free with a bit and a short driver or a ratchet first, then wind it out.

Six millimetres is a broad blade, matching larger slotted machine screws, panel and cover fixings and general equipment fasteners. Fit matters as always: the blade should very nearly fill the slot, since a narrow blade concentrates force and rounds the slot while an oversized one rides out of the head.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for toughness. The handle is moulded TPR, and on a stubby the grip material matters more than usual because you are turning it with much less hand contact.

Two points. Keep firm axial pressure into the screw, which is harder with a short handle and matters just as much.
