Thirty centimetres of shaft goes places that are otherwise inaccessible without dismantling: deep inside machinery casings, down through a duct or a shaft, behind fixed panels, at the back of large enclosures, into the interior of pumps, motors and industrial equipment. When a job comes down to a single fixing at the far end of a cavity, a driver like this is the difference between two minutes and half a day.

It is worth being straightforward about what a 300mm shaft is and is not. It is a reaching tool. The shaft is long enough that it twists appreciably under load, so the feel at the handle lags what is happening at the tip, and it will bend permanently if it is used as a lever, a pry bar or a punch — which at this length takes very little. If a screw is seized, improve the access and use a short stout driver rather than winding harder on this one.

Six millimetres is a broad blade suiting large slotted machine and cover screws. Blade fit is what protects them, since a slotted head gives the driver nothing to centre on: the blade should nearly fill the slot, because a narrow one rounds the slot walls and an oversized one rides out under load.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for the grain refinement and toughness that a long shaft needs most. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two habits. Firm axial pressure throughout, because a long blade drifts out of a slot easily. And keep both hands involved where you can — one on the handle and one steadying the shaft near the work gives far better control.
