The combination is less common than it should be. Long drivers are usually slim because reach normally goes with small work, but industrial equipment is full of the opposite case: a large slotted fixing set well back inside a machine, an enclosure or a housing. Motor and pump covers, switchgear enclosures, machinery guards and industrial panels all present that problem, and a short broad driver simply cannot reach while a long slim one is the wrong size for the slot.

Two limitations come with the length and both are worth knowing. A long shaft twists measurably under load before the screw moves, which reduces the feel that tells you whether a screw is about to turn or about to strip — go steadily and keep the pressure on. And the shaft will take a permanent bend if it is used as a lever, which at this length needs very little force.

Blade fit is what keeps slotted screws reusable. Nothing centres the driver on a slotted head, unlike a cross-head, so location comes entirely from the blade filling the slot: too narrow and the turning force rounds out the slot walls, too wide and the blade cannot seat and rides out under load.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium giving hardness and wear resistance to hold the tip's corners, vanadium refining the grain for the toughness a long shaft particularly needs. The handle is moulded TPR, gripping well in oily hands.

The buyers are industrial and plant maintenance, machinery and equipment fitters, electricians and panel builders, pump and motor servicing, marine and generator engineering, and hardware dealers supplying industry.

Two habits. Keep firm axial pressure down the shaft while turning. And keep it for turning — a driver this long used as a pry bar is a driver you will be throwing away.
