Most long screwdrivers are slim, because reach usually goes with small screws in deep places. This one is different: it has a broad 6mm blade on a long shaft, so it can turn a substantial slotted screw that happens to be a long way inside something. Machinery covers, electrical enclosures, industrial equipment, pumps and motors are full of exactly that — big slotted fixings set well back from the surface.

The length also keeps your hand well clear of the surroundings, which matters when they are hot, sharp, greasy or crowded.

The honest limitation is that a long shaft twists slightly under load, so you feel less of what is happening at the tip than you would with a short driver. On a tight screw that matters, because feel is what tells you the screw is about to move rather than about to strip. Go steadily and keep the pressure on.

Blade fit is what protects a slotted head, since nothing centres the driver for you the way a cross-head does. The blade should nearly fill the slot — narrower and the force rounds the slot walls, wider and the blade rides out under load.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel with chromium for hardness and wear resistance and vanadium for grain refinement and toughness. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two habits. Keep firm axial pressure while turning, since a long shaft makes it easier for the tip to drift out of the slot. And never use it as a lever — at this length a shaft bends permanently with surprisingly little provocation.
