The problem is depth. Some screws are simply a long way in: at the back of a deep cabinet, down inside a machine casing, behind a fixed panel, at the bottom of a tube or duct, or in a position where the surrounding structure will not let a normal driver approach at all. When that is the case, no amount of technique substitutes for length, and having one long driver in the drawer turns an afternoon of dismantling into a two-minute job.

Two honest limitations come with the length. The shaft is slender relative to its length, so it flexes and twists under load and gives noticeably less feel than a short driver — you cannot tell as easily when a screw is about to move or about to strip. And it will take a permanent bend if it is used as a lever or a pry bar, which at this length happens more easily than people expect. Use it for reach and use something shorter for force.

Five millimetres is the general-purpose slotted width. Fit remains what protects the screw: the blade should nearly fill the slot, because a narrow blade concentrates the turning force in a small part of the slot and rounds it out, while too wide a blade cannot seat and rides out of the head.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for the grain refinement and toughness that a long slender shaft particularly needs. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two points. Keep firm axial pressure into the screw while turning, since a long blade drifts out of a slot more readily than a short one.
