The situations are familiar: a screw at the back of an enclosure, a fixing down inside a machine, a terminal behind other equipment, a cover screw at the bottom of a deep recess. In every one, the screw is easy and the access is the job.

A long shaft also lets you keep your hand clear of what surrounds the work, which matters when the surroundings are hot, sharp or live-adjacent.

The trade is feel and stiffness. A longer shaft twists a little more under load before the screw moves, so you get less of the fine feedback that tells you a screw is about to move or about to strip. And a long shaft is easier to bend if it is misused as a lever. Long drivers are for reach, not for force — if a screw is genuinely seized, improve the access and use a shorter, stouter driver rather than leaning on this one.

Five millimetres remains the general-purpose slotted width, and fit is what protects the screw: the blade should nearly fill the slot, since a narrow blade concentrates force and rounds the slot out while an oversized one rides up out of the head.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, with chromium for hardness and wear resistance and vanadium for the grain refinement and toughness that keep a long shaft from being brittle. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two habits. Keep steady axial pressure on the screw as you turn, because a long blade makes it easier to let the tip drift out of the slot.
