Five by one hundred and fifty is a long-standing standard size, and there is a reason so many toolkits contain exactly this driver: it is long enough to reach into most things and short enough to stay controllable.
Blade length is really about access. A short driver gives the best feel and control but needs the screw to be close to the surface. A long one reaches into recesses, past obstructions and down into housings, at the cost of a little feel because a longer shaft twists slightly under load before the screw turns. At 150mm the compromise sits where most general work wants it.
Five millimetres is the general-purpose width, matching the middle range of slotted screws found on machinery, equipment, panels, brackets and general fixings.
Getting the width right is the single most useful habit with slotted screws. The blade should nearly fill the slot; a narrow blade concentrates all the force in a small area and rounds the slot out, and a blade too wide will not seat and rides up out of the head. Unlike a cross-head screw, which centres the driver for you, a slotted screw relies entirely on you choosing the right size and keeping it there.
The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel. Chromium gives the hardness and wear resistance that stops a tip rounding off; vanadium refines the grain and adds the toughness that stops a hard tip chipping; tempering after hardening is what balances them. The handle is moulded TPR, gripping well in oily hands.
The buyers are electricians and panel builders, appliance and equipment repairers, machinery and maintenance fitters, general workshops, building trades, households, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Push into the screw while turning, since the blade lifting out is what damages slots. Dress a worn tip square on a grinder with frequent dips in water — overheating draws the temper and leaves you with a soft tip that will never hold up again, which is how people ruin a driver while trying to restore it.
And treat the handle as grip alone: TPR has no tested electrical rating. Isolate and prove dead before working on any circuit. Ask on WhatsApp for a price.
