It is enough to clear a raised edge, get past a projecting component, or reach a screw recessed just far enough that a 100mm driver has your knuckles against the work. Anybody who has tried to turn a screw with the handle jammed against something knows that the last inch of reach is worth a great deal, and 125mm is the length many people settle on as their standard.

Five millimetres remains the width that suits the widest spread of slotted screws — machine screws, terminal and panel fixings, brackets, hinges, and general equipment fasteners.

Fit is what keeps slotted screws usable. The blade should very nearly fill the slot: too narrow and the force concentrates on a small part of the slot and rounds it, too wide and the blade will not seat and rides out of the head. Slotted heads punish a poor fit more than cross-head ones do.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel where chromium provides hardness and wear resistance and vanadium refines the grain for toughness. Both matter at the tip: a soft tip rounds off within weeks of real use, a brittle one chips.

The handle is moulded TPR, which keeps its grip when hands are oily or wet.

Three habits. Keep pressure into the screw as you turn — cam-out and slot damage almost always follow a loss of axial pressure. Choose the widest blade that will fit the slot rather than the first driver to hand, since that single choice decides whether the screw comes out cleanly or has to be drilled.
