Five millimetres suits the middle range of slotted screws: general machine screws, larger terminal screws, panel and cover fixings, brackets, hinges, and most of the slotted fasteners on machinery and equipment. It is the size that fits the widest spread of what you actually meet.

Fit is the whole point with slotted screws. The blade should nearly fill the slot in both width and thickness. Too narrow, and all the turning force bears on a small part of the slot, which rounds it out; too wide, and the blade cannot seat and rides up out of the head, chewing the screw and scarring whatever surrounds it. Slotted heads are less forgiving than cross-head ones in this respect, which is why a range of widths exists rather than a single driver.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered. That is a definite steel specification rather than a vague one: 6150 is a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium giving hardness and wear resistance so the tip holds its shape, vanadium refining the grain for the toughness that keeps a hard tip from chipping. Tempering after hardening is what takes the brittleness back out.

The handle is TPR — moulded thermoplastic rubber, grippy when your hands are oily.

Three habits. Push into the screw as you turn, since most damage happens when the blade lifts out under load. Dress a worn tip square on a grinder, cooling it in water frequently so you do not draw the temper — a slotted tip is one of the few driver tips that can genuinely be restored, which is a real advantage over cross-head types.
