That is the whole discipline of using slotted screws well. A blade narrower than the slot bears on only part of it, so all the turning force is concentrated in a small area and the driver twists in the slot, rounding its corners. A blade wider than the slot will not seat and rides up out of it, chewing the screw head and often the surrounding surface. Matching the width is what makes a slotted screw come out cleanly, and it is why slotted drivers are sold in a range of widths rather than one general size.

At 3 x 100mm this is for small work: terminal screws, electrical accessories, appliance and instrument covers, small brackets, hinges and catches, and the countless small slotted fixings still used across equipment.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered. That is a specific steel rather than a general claim — 6150 is a chromium-vanadium spring steel, and the chromium gives hardness and wear resistance while the vanadium refines the grain for toughness. On a screwdriver tip both matter: too soft and the tip rounds off in weeks, too brittle and it chips. Tempering after hardening is what removes the brittleness.

The handle is TPR, a moulded thermoplastic rubber that grips well in an oily or sweaty hand.

Two things worth knowing. A screwdriver is not a chisel, a lever or a punch. Using one to prise, scrape or lever is what bends shafts and breaks tips, and it is the commonest way good drivers are ruined — keep a small pry bar for prying.
