PH3 is the large Phillips size, found on heavy machine screws, coach and structural screws, larger machinery and vehicle fasteners. Those are the fixings that get properly tight and properly corroded, and they are exactly where a striking driver earns its place.

The construction runs the shaft the full length of the handle to a metal cap, so a hammer blow travels down the steel instead of splitting a plastic handle — which is what happens when an ordinary driver is hit.

Why shock helps on a large cross-head is worth understanding. The Phillips recess was designed to cam out at a set torque, so a seized cross-head does not simply resist — it actively pushes the driver out and rounds its own recess while doing so. The larger the screw and the higher the torque, the harder it tries. A sharp axial hammer blow breaks the corrosion bond in the thread and simultaneously drives the tip fully home so every flute is engaged. Strike, then turn immediately with heavy downward pressure while the tip is seated.

Size discipline matters most here: a PH2 driver in a PH3 recess bears only on part of the recess walls, and under the torque a large screw needs it will round the head out in a turn or two. If the recess is PH3, use PH3.

The blade is Cr-V, tempered, with a moulded TPR handle.

Three points. Strike squarely down the axis; a glancing blow bends the shaft. Give penetrating oil time to work before you start, since it does as much as the hammer does. And wear eye protection, because shocking corroded fasteners throws rust, paint and scale.
