That is a less common requirement than a long PH2, but when it arises nothing else will do: a large cross-head screw inside a machine casing, behind a structural panel, down in an equipment cabinet, or at the back of a vehicle assembly. A large driver that cannot reach and a long driver that is the wrong size are equally useless.

Two things need care at this size and length. First, the correct size: a PH2 in a PH3 recess sits deep in the middle, contacts only part of the recess walls and rounds it out under the torque a large screw needs. Second, the shaft: 250mm twists appreciably under load, so the feel at your hand lags the tip, and it will take a permanent bend if used as a lever. Reach and turning, not prying.

Axial pressure is the habit that matters most, and it matters more at high torque. The Phillips recess was designed to cam out deliberately, pushing the driver up and out at a set torque, and the harder you turn the harder it tries to eject the tip. On a large screw, press down on the handle with real force — using your free hand on the end of the handle if you can — while turning steadily.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered: a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for the hardness and wear resistance that keeps the flute form crisp under high torque, vanadium for the grain refinement and toughness a long shaft needs. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two points. Steady the shaft near the tip with your free hand — on a long driver at high torque it is the difference between control and a slipped tip.
