Equipment work is full of them: a PH2 fixing at the back of an enclosure, down inside a machine casing, behind a panel, at the bottom of a deep moulding. The screw is entirely routine and the access is the whole job, and a 200mm shaft frequently saves dismantling something that did not need to come apart.

The trade is feel. A longer shaft twists slightly under load, so what your hand senses lags what is happening at the tip. On a cross-head screw that matters, because the moment before a recess starts to round is exactly what feel would have warned you about. Turn steadily, and keep firm pressure into the screw.

That pressure is the key habit with any Phillips driver. The recess was designed to cam out deliberately — to push the driver out at a set torque so that early production lines could not over-tighten — and every Phillips screw made still behaves that way. It is why cross-heads round so readily, and axial force is the only real defence. On a long driver it is easier to let that pressure slip, so it is worth being conscious of.

PH2 fits the great majority of cross-head screws in general use.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance to hold the flute form, vanadium for grain refinement and the toughness a long shaft needs. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two points. Steady the shaft with your free hand near the work — on a long driver that single change transforms control. And replace a worn tip rather than persevering, since a cross-head form cannot be restored by hand.
