The reason is simply that the extra 25mm costs nothing in handling and repeatedly earns its place — clearing a raised edge, reaching past a projecting component, getting to a screw set back in a recess without your hand fouling the work. On appliance, cabinet and equipment work, where fixings are frequently sunk inside mouldings, it is a common situation.

PH2 is the standard cross-head size fitting the great majority of screws in general use: machine screws, woodscrews and chipboard screws, appliance and equipment fixings, electrical accessories, furniture and panel assembly.

Something worth knowing about cross-head screws, since this is the size you will meet them in most: Phillips and Pozidriv look similar and are not the same. A Pozidriv recess has additional small ribs between the main flutes, and Pozidriv screws are common on furniture, cabinet fittings and construction fixings. A Phillips driver in a Pozidriv screw contacts only part of the recess and cams out early; a Pozidriv driver in a Phillips screw sits badly and does the same. If a screw is rounding out under a driver that looks the right size, check which of the two you are actually holding — the Pozidriv screw head usually has small lines between the cross arms.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for grain refinement and toughness. The handle is moulded TPR.
