PH2 is the standard cross-head size and it fits an enormous proportion of the screws anyone encounters: general machine screws, woodscrews and chipboard screws, appliance and equipment fixings, electrical accessories, furniture and cabinet assembly, panels, brackets and covers. The 100mm shaft is the everyday length — enough reach for normal work, short enough to keep good feel and control.

Because it is used constantly, it is also the driver most worth buying properly and most worth replacing when it wears. A worn PH2 does not announce itself: the four flutes gradually round off, the tip blunts, and it starts slipping in recesses that a new driver turns easily. People carry on because the change is slow, and every screw that worn tip touches gets damaged. Unlike a slotted blade, which can be dressed square on a grinder, a cross-head form cannot be restored by hand. When it is worn, replace it — and check yours by looking at the flute corners under a light.

The single habit that most reduces stripped screws is axial pressure. The Phillips recess was deliberately designed to cam out, pushing the driver up and out at a set torque so that early production lines could not over-tighten. Every Phillips screw still does it. Push hard into the screw as you turn, and the tip stays engaged.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance to slow that tip wear, vanadium for grain refinement and toughness. The handle is moulded TPR.
