PH1 is the size below the ubiquitous PH2, and it fits the smaller cross-head screws found in appliances, electrical accessories, equipment casings, small brackets, hinges and fittings, and a great deal of assembly work. Getting that size right is more than a detail: Phillips sizes are different geometries, not just different scales, so a PH2 in a PH1 screw sits proud and bears only on the outer edges of the recess, chewing it out within a turn or two, while a PH0 bottoms out and cams straight back at you.

The short 75mm shaft is a deliberate choice for precision. A short blade gives far better feel and control than a long one because there is almost no twist between your hand and the tip, and on small screws feel is what tells you when a screw is seating rather than stripping. It also works where headroom above the screw is limited.

It is worth knowing why cross-head screws round out so easily. The Phillips recess was designed to cam out — to eject the driver at a certain torque, which on early production lines prevented over-tightening. That behaviour is now mostly a nuisance, and the only real defence is firm axial pressure: push hard into the screw while turning and the tip stays engaged. Most stripped cross-heads are the result of turning without pushing.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance to keep the tip form crisp, vanadium for grain refinement and toughness. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two points. Replace a worn cross-head driver rather than attempting to grind it — the tip form cannot be restored by hand, and a worn PH tip destroys every screw it touches.
