The situation is always the same: a small Phillips screw a long way inside something, where the fixing is trivial and the approach is everything. Deep equipment housings, machinery interiors, ducts and channels, the back of large enclosures. When that comes up, no technique substitutes for length, and the alternative is stripping down an assembly that did not otherwise need to come apart.

The limitations of a long slim shaft need stating because at 250mm they are pronounced. The shaft twists noticeably under load, so there is a lag between what your hand feels and what the tip is doing — and on a small screw, that feel is the only warning you get before the recess starts to round. It will also take a permanent bend if used as a lever or a pry bar. This is a reaching tool, not a forcing one.

Axial pressure is the habit that saves cross-head screws, and it is hardest to maintain on a long driver. The Phillips recess was designed to cam out on purpose — ejecting the driver at a set torque to prevent over-tightening on 1930s production lines — and that behaviour is still in every Phillips screw made. Push into the screw as hard as you turn it, and steady the shaft with your free hand near the tip.

PH1 fits the cross-head size below PH2, and Phillips sizes are distinct geometries rather than scaled copies, so the wrong size chews a recess quickly.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — a chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for the toughness a long slender shaft particularly needs. The handle is moulded TPR.
