Twenty-five millimetres does not sound like much and it repeatedly makes the difference: clearing a raised lip, getting past a projecting component, reaching a screw set back in a recess without your knuckles fouling the work. On appliance and equipment work — where fixings are frequently recessed inside mouldings and behind panels — that is a common situation.

PH1 fits the cross-head screws one size below the very common PH2. Size matters because Phillips sizes are different geometries rather than scaled versions of one another: a PH2 in a PH1 recess touches only the outer edges and chews them out, while a PH0 bottoms in the recess and cams straight out.

Since the tips wear, it is worth knowing how to spot it. A good cross-head tip has four crisp flutes with sharp edges. A worn one has visibly rounded flute corners and a blunted point, and it will slip in a recess that a new driver turns easily. People persevere with worn drivers because the failure is gradual, and every screw they touch is damaged in the process. Unlike a slotted blade, a cross-head form cannot be dressed back by hand — when it is worn, it is finished.

The blade is Cr-V 6150, tempered — chromium-vanadium spring steel, chromium for hardness and wear resistance to slow that wear, vanadium for grain refinement and toughness. The handle is moulded TPR.

Two habits. Push firmly into the screw while turning — the Phillips recess is designed to cam out under torque, and axial pressure is the only thing that keeps the tip engaged.
