Hex Adaptor (1/2")

The principle is straightforward: a 1/4" hex shank at one end to fit the driver's chuck, and a square drive at the other to take sockets. That turns a cordless driver into a very fast nut runner. On a job with fifty bolts to run down — dismantling machinery, assembling framing, removing wheels and panels, stripping a structure — running them out with a driver and finishing by hand is far quicker than doing all of it with a ratchet.

The set covers three drive sizes: 1/4" x 65mm, 3/8" x 65mm and 1/2" x 70mm, so it takes whichever sockets you already own.

The material is 40Cr — a chromium alloy structural steel, hardened, which is the sensible choice for a component whose job is to transmit torque between two drives. The stresses concentrate at the square drive shoulder, and that is where a weak adaptor twists.

Two honest limitations are worth stating. First, an adaptor is a torque path with a joint in it, and it is the weakest link — running a large socket on a powerful impact driver through a small adaptor is how adaptors are twisted off. Match the adaptor size to the work.

Second, and more important: chrome hand sockets must never be used on an impact driver, adaptor or not. Chrome-plated hardened Cr-V is brittle under impact hammering, cracks, and throws fragments. If you are using an impact driver, use the black chrome molybdenum impact sockets that exist for it — and impact-rated adaptors with them. An ordinary adaptor on an impact gun is itself at risk.
