The problem is common and the solution is elegant. Sheet metal, tube and thin panels are too thin to hold a thread — tap an M6 into 1.5mm sheet and there are barely two threads engaged, which will strip the first time it is tightened. A rivet nut, also called a nutsert or blind rivet nut, is a threaded steel insert that is set into a drilled hole from one side: the tool screws onto its internal thread, pulls, and the body of the insert crumples and bulges against the blind side, locking it permanently in place. What you are left with is a proper threaded hole in thin material, into which a bolt can be fitted and removed as often as you like.

That is why rivet nuts are used throughout vehicle bodies, trailers, ducting, enclosures, machinery panels, signage and furniture — anywhere something needs to be bolted to a panel repeatedly.

At 9 inches this is the compact hand tool, with an aluminium alloy body, a high carbon steel handle with a TPR sleeve, and a Cr-Mo nut rod. The nut rod is the highly stressed part — it is a threaded mandrel that must screw into the insert, take the full pull, and then unscrew cleanly — and Cr-Mo is the tough alloy that suits it.

Capacity is M3, M4, M5 and M6, with ten nuts of each size supplied so the tool is usable immediately.

Two habits. Screw the nut rod fully into the insert before pulling, since a partly engaged thread will strip the insert and jam the tool. And drill the hole to the insert's stated size — a hole that is oversized lets the insert spin in place afterwards, which is the commonest failure and impossible to fix without cutting it out.
