9.5" Hand Riveter

The mechanism is neat. A blind rivet is a hollow body with a mandrel — a steel pin — running through it. You slide the mandrel into the riveter's nose, push the rivet through the hole in both workpieces, and squeeze. The tool pulls the mandrel while pushing on the rivet body, so the mandrel's head deforms the far end of the body into a bulge on the blind side, clamping the pieces together. Keep squeezing and the mandrel snaps off at a designed weak point, leaving a permanent fixing. The whole thing takes two seconds and never needs access to the back.

That is why blind rivets dominate sheet metal work, ducting, cladding, signage, vehicle body repair, trailer and container work, and anywhere a joint is in a closed section.

At 9.5 inches this is the compact riveter, made from quality steel with PVC grips, and suitable for single-handed use — which matters because the other hand is usually holding the workpieces in alignment. It takes 2.4, 3.2, 4.0 and 4.8mm rivets, covering the standard range.

Three habits. Match the rivet length to the total thickness being joined — too short and it will not form a proper bulge, too long and the joint stays loose.
