That is where nut drivers earn their place. A self-drilling screw drills its own pilot, cuts its own thread and clamps, all in one continuous drive, and it does that at speed in a power driver. It needs a socket rather than a bit because the head is a hex, and it needs a magnet because you are usually holding the sheet with your other hand.

The magnet is the feature that changes the work. It picks the screw up, holds it on the driver, and lets you place and start it one-handed — overhead, at arm's length, up a ladder, or inside a duct where you cannot get a second hand in. Without it, every screw has to be pinched between finger and thumb and held while the driver finds it.

These are the long pattern, and length is what clears the flange, channel or corner that a self-drilling screw is so often driven beside. A short socket brings the chuck onto the surrounding metal before the screw is home.

The material is high grade Cr-V, hardened and tempered — chromium for the hardness and wear resistance that keeps the internal hex corners sharp, vanadium for the toughness that stops a thin-walled socket splitting under torque.
