The reason is one-handed working. Driving self-drilling screws, sheet metal screws and small hex-head fasteners usually means holding the material with one hand and the driver with the other, and there is nothing left to hold the screw. A magnetised socket picks the screw up, holds it on the end of the driver, and lets you place and drive it in one movement — up a ladder, overhead on a soffit, or at arm's length inside a duct.
