Ten millimetre heads turn up on the larger self-drilling and self-tapping screws — the ones used for heavier gauge sheet, cladding, roofing sheet, steel framing, ducting flanges and larger tray and trunking. They take more torque than the smaller sizes, which is where the specification of the driver starts to matter.

The material is high grade Cr-V, hardened and tempered. On a nut driver socket the important consequence is corner wear. A socket that has rounded internally will still fit over a screw head and will still turn it, right up until the torque rises — then it slips, rounds the head and you have a fastener that has to be drilled out of finished sheet. Because the socket wears gradually and invisibly from the inside, that failure arrives without warning. Chromium provides the hardness and wear resistance that delays it; vanadium provides the toughness that keeps a thin-walled socket from splitting.

The magnet holds the screw on the driver for one-handed placing, which on cladding, roofing and overhead ducting work is the difference between a fast job and a slow one.
