Extended, the arms give enormous leverage — which is what lets this tool set the large 6.0 and 6.4mm rivets that no hand riveter will manage, along with the standard 3.2, 4.0 and 4.8mm sizes. Large rivets are used where the joint carries real load: trailer and container bodies, structural cladding, heavy ducting, agricultural and plant equipment. Setting them takes force that only a long lever provides.

Folded, it goes in a toolbox instead of needing a rack of its own, which is what makes it practical to carry a tool of this capacity to a job at all.

The clamp units are Cr-Mo alloy steel — chromium molybdenum, the tough alloy used where components take high load and shock. On a riveter the jaws that grip the mandrel are the highest-stressed part: they must bite a hardened steel pin hard enough to pull it until it snaps, thousands of times. Soft jaws round off and start slipping, at which point the tool stops setting rivets properly, and jaw wear is what ends most riveters' lives.

Five interchangeable nozzles cover the rivet sizes. Fitting the right one is not optional — each rivet diameter needs its own nose tip, and an oversized nozzle lets the rivet body deform where it should be supported, producing a joint that looks set and is loose.

Three habits. Match the rivet length to the combined thickness of the materials. Drill the hole to the rivet's stated diameter, since an oversized hole gives nothing to clamp.
