The magnet is the reason to use a nut driver rather than a socket and ratchet for this work. It holds the nut or bolt on the driver so you can place and start it one-handed — which matters when the other hand is holding the component in position, and matters a great deal when the fastener is overhead or inside an assembly where a dropped nut is gone.
