The mechanism is simple and clever. Inside the handle, angled cam surfaces turn axial force into rotation. Hit the end with a hammer and the body drives downward while the output shaft is forced to rotate — typically a fraction of a turn — with enormous instantaneous torque. Because the blow also drives the bit hard into the screw at the same instant, the bit cannot cam out while the twist is applied.

That combination is precisely what a seized screw needs. Corroded, painted-in and thread-locked fasteners resist steady turning by rounding their own recess; they cannot resist a shock. Japanese motorcycles and older vehicles in particular are full of cross-head screws that no screwdriver will ever remove and an impact driver takes out in one blow.

The set is fourteen pieces: slotted at 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10mm, Phillips at PH1 to PH4, and hex at H4, H5, H6 and H8, with a chrome-plated impact handle. The bits are S2 — the shock-resisting tool steel that this application demands above all others, since these bits take hammer blows directly. The handle is tool steel, tempered.

Three habits. Set the direction before you strike, and check it — an impact driver set to tighten on a seized screw will make matters considerably worse. Push down hard on the tool as you strike, so the bit is fully seated in the recess. And use a proper hammer with a decent weight; a light tap achieves nothing, because the tool needs a genuine blow to index the cams.
