One hundred millimetres is bought for access. A short bit leaves the chuck or the holder close to the work, so it fouls on anything around the screw — a countersink, a moulding, a lip, a frame member. A 100mm bit puts the tip out where it can reach while the driver body stays clear, which on cabinet work, kitchen fitting, equipment assembly and framing is often the difference between driving a screw and taking something apart to reach it.

The trade is flex and alignment. A longer shank twists slightly under torque and will wander if the driver is not square to the screw. Line the driver up on the axis of the fixing, start slowly, and keep pressure straight down that axis — a long bit driven at an angle cams out and rounds a screw far more readily than a short one does.

The specification is S2 at HRC 58-62. S2 is a shock-resisting tool steel, which is exactly what a power driver bit needs: it takes a high hardness while still absorbing the repeated hammering and cam-out that would shatter a more brittle steel. HRC 58-62 is well beyond a hand screwdriver blade's hardness of around 50. On a long bit the toughness half of that balance matters especially, since a brittle shank of this length and diameter would snap rather than flex.

Two habits. Press firmly into the screw as you drive — the Phillips recess was designed to cam out at a set torque, and pressure is the only real defence, which is harder to maintain on a long bit. And replace the bit once the flutes show rounding, because a worn tip rounds every screw it touches and the wear is gradual enough to go unnoticed.
