That problem is the countersink. A screw sitting at the bottom of a countersunk hole, a moulded recess or a pilot hole in thick material puts its head well below the surface, and a standard 25mm insert bit leaves the chuck or the holder hard against that surface before the tip reaches the screw. You end up either not reaching the screw at all or marking the work with the chuck. A 100mm bit puts the tip a comfortable distance out and keeps the driver body clear.

It is also the length that lets you drive at a slight angle when a fixing is in a corner, because there is enough shank to clear the adjacent surface.

The trade with any long bit is alignment. A longer shank twists slightly under torque and wanders if the driver is not square to the screw, so line the driver up on the axis of the fixing, start slowly, and keep pressure straight down that axis. A long bit driven at an angle cams out and rounds a screw far more readily than a short one.

The steel is S2 industrial, hardened and tempered to HRC 58-62 — a shock-resisting tool steel, which takes a high hardness while still absorbing the camming and hammering of a power driver rather than shattering.
